Lesson Plan for reading Bob’s Birthday Blobs to preschoolers
Introduce the book
Fill a large Happy Birthday gift bag with a few of your favorite things like a birthday card, a paint brush, a book, a toy dog, ect. Pull the items out one at a time and say how they make you happy.
Today we are going to read a story about birthdays, an art project and a puppy. Let’s listen to find out what sad thing happens on the puppy’s birthday!
Read the Story
Read the story pausing to point out Betty Barker. Draw the conclusion that she bakes treats for dogs from the illustrations. As you read the book you can have the students repeat the words and read them with you. Point when it says Bob Go and have the students point and say, Bob go!
Post reading questions to ask students
Why was Bob Sad in this picture?
What did Betty show Bob in this picture?
What did Betty use to decorate for Bob’s Birthday Party?
How was Bob feeling at the end of the story?
After reading the book, if you have time to do the art project say, “Would you like to make a blob of your own like Bob did?”
Make a Blob
Have the children color the accompanying coloring page and call two to three students back to a table to make the blob art project while the others are coloring.
When the students arrives at the paint station, have them complete the following steps:
- Put their name on the back of a piece of paper.
- Fold the paper in half.
- Have the students pick three colors of paint and put 3-5 dime size dots of each color of paint on the paper.
- Refold the paper.
- Rub the top lightly to mix the colors together.
Open the paper up and see what they created. You can say, “It is beautiful just like you!” Put the completed project on a drying rack or lay them flat on a counter to dry.
Tips for making the blob art project
In this photo please note the types of bottle used for applying the paint.
These bottles can be ordered online or found at your local craft store.
Tempera paint is a good washable choice of paint.
The black tops of the bottles should be cut off a bit on the top to make the paint come out well. Also note the half sheets of paper. Using half sheets works well and conserves drying space.
Having a bag of wipes available easily cleans up any messes.
Enjoy!
Letter B Activity Options
Copy this page in black or white and have the students circle all of the items that they see that start with the letter /b/ sound.
Show the students this illustration and create a written list of the objects that start with the letter b in the picture. After you have the list underline the letter b and read the list again to the students. (Don’t forget the towel bar) ?
